GPON Optical Power Budget

Calculating the optical power budget is critical for designing a reliable GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network). You must ensure that the total signal loss does not exceed the dynamic range of your optical transceivers.

Typical Loss Values

  • Fiber Cable (G.652): 0.35 dB/km at 1310nm, 0.22 dB/km at 1490nm.
  • Connector (SC/APC): 0.3 - 0.5 dB per mated pair.
  • Mechanical Splice: 0.1 - 0.3 dB.
  • Fusion Splice: < 0.05 dB.
