What a MAC address lookup tells you
Every network interface ships with a 48-bit MAC address. The first 24 bits are the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier), assigned by the IEEE to the manufacturer. Looking up the OUI tells you which vendor built the network card or device, which is useful for inventory, troubleshooting and spotting rogue hardware.
Universal vs locally administered
The second-least-significant bit of the first octet marks a locally administered address (set by software, common with virtualization and MAC randomization), while the least-significant bit marks a multicast frame. Randomized MACs used by modern phones are locally administered and will not resolve to a real vendor.
